Title and Registration for Trailers in Wyoming

Whether you purchase or lease trailers for your trucking business, it's essential to have them titled and registered in Wyoming before hitting the highways.

How to Obtain a Title for Your Trailer

The process of getting a title for your trailer begins at the DMV. To streamline your experience, you can complete many forms online. If you’ve bought or leased the trailer, the previous owner or lessor should have initiated a transfer of the title to your name, serving as proof of ownership. If you acquired a new trailer directly from a manufacturer or dealership, you will need to fill out a title application.

Registering Your Trailer

To register your trailer, you'll need to provide the DMV with proof of ownership—such as the title or bill of sale—along with a completed registration application. Additionally, you'll need to demonstrate that you've paid all relevant taxes and secured the appropriate insurance for your trailer.

Let Drive Haul assist you in navigating the title and registration process, ensuring your trailers are road-ready in Wyoming!

Costs for Title and Registration of Trailers

When registering your trailer in Wyoming, the costs are straightforward, provided there are no liens on it. Here’s what you can expect:

Title Fees

The title fee for a trailer is $55.

Registration Costs

The annual registration fee for trailers is based on weight:

  • Up to 1,000 pounds: $15

  • 1,001 to 2,000 pounds: $20

  • 2,001 to 5,000 pounds: $40

  • Over 5,000 pounds: $18 for every additional 1,000 pounds

If you plan to transport loads across state lines, you’ll need to obtain “apportioned registration.” This allows you to operate in multiple jurisdictions without acquiring separate permits for each state. The fees you pay will be proportional to the miles you travel in each state.

Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax

In addition to standard business taxes, as a carrier, you must file a Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax return with the IRS annually. This tax applies to vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more operating on public highways.

The taxable gross weight of a vehicle is determined by:

  1. The fully equipped, unloaded vehicle weight

  2. The weight of the fully equipped trailer or semi-trailer

  3. The maximum load weight carried on the vehicle and attached trailer

Checking Driver Records

If you’re hiring drivers for your trucking business, it’s essential to check their motor vehicle records. You can request a driving record for individuals other than yourself either in person or by mail. You can obtain a three-year, five-year, or full driving record, with each report costing $25.
